Previous “tough on crime” policies left a damaging and enduring legacy across the country, particularly in black communities. To create safe communities, we must address the social, economic, and environmental conditions that are linked to crime. Research shows that communities are safer when residents have access to stable jobs, high-quality schools and social services, and clean and vibrant public spaces.
